The Municipality of Trondheim offers newly arrived immigrant students a place in a reception school for up to one year. Parents / guardians must contact their local school where they can receive information about what the municipality can offer. If parents want the pupil to go to a reception class, the local school applies for a place at one of the reception schools on behalf of the parents. Applications are processed by the Early Childhood and Education Office, which makes decisions about places in reception schools. The Municipality of Trondheim recommends that newly arrived immigrant pupils attend a reception class if this is in the best interests of the individual student.
Trondheim has six reception schools for newly arrived immigrant pupils, four reception schools at primary school level (Bispehaugen, Ila, Kattem and Saupstad) and two reception schools at secondary school level (Huseby and Rosenborg). Reception schools at primary school level have personnel responsibility for the bilingual teachers.
Reception Schools are responsible for:
* Intensive Norwegian education for newly arrived students.
* Organizing mother tongue instruction and bilingual subject training.
* Arranging transportation of students (bus and taxi) to / from the reception school.
* Guidance for the other municipal and private schools in Trondheim on minority-related topics.
